An update on Liverpool’s efforts to add another central defence alternative to the lineup before the 2023–24 season has come to light.

What recent Liverpool transfer news is there?

The Reds have reportedly made an increased offer of €40 million (£34 million) to Torino for center-back Perr Schuurs during the summer transfer window, according to Tuttosport.

In order to intensify their chase of the Dutch custodian before the start of the Premier League season next month, the source states that Jurgen Klopp’s team has submitted an official approach.

It claims that West Ham United and Crystal Palace, two other top-flight clubs, are also interested in signing the Netherlands U21 international, however it is unclear whether they would be willing to match Liverpool’s offer.

Perr Schuurs’ calibre is what?

With his performances at the back for Torino last season, Schuurs demonstrated that he was a reliable performer at the Serie A level. His arrival might be the end of Nat Phillips’ stay at Anfield.

The Liverpool Echo recently suggested that the English juggernaut’s chances of playing next season would likely be limited by a new center-back signing.

The 26-year-old defender is wanted by both Feyenoord and Leeds United of the Championship, but the club may have to lower its £10 million value of him in order to allow a transfer.

Schuurs had a higher Sofascore rating last season than Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate, Phillips, and Joel Matip did in the Premier League, averaging 6.87 across 30 Serie A games.

This means that, if he can carry over his Italian performances to England while also having room to grow, the 23-year-old battler has the potential to be one of Klopp’s top alternatives in that part of the park.

The Torino star would also become, by a year, the manager’s junior center-back. This indicates that the talented enforcer would join Liverpool as a player with long-term potential rather than a temporary hire with limited room for growth and development over time.

Phillips, however, has yet to establish a permanent place on the first team by the age of 26. After spending the 2021–2022 season on loan at Bournemouth in the Championship, he made two Premier League appearances last season.

This does not imply that the former Stuttgart loanee is about to establish himself as a frontline central defensive option for the German head coach, thus the signing of Schuurs could provide the club with an opportunity to transfer him on.

In addition to Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Matip, and Konate, the former Borussia Dortmund coach would have the Dutch giant, who was referred to as a “mountain” by journalist Josh Bunting, as a fifth center-back, which should be helpful.

As a result, Liverpool would be able to approve Phillips’ departure, whether it be to Leeds or Feyenoord, knowing that they wouldn’t be shorthanded going into the following season.
