Leeds United have taken former player Sam Byram on trial as they weigh up whether to sign the full-back on a free transfer.

Leeds interested in Sam Byram

Since he progressed through the ranks at Elland Road and made nearly 150 appearances for the team before landing a high-profile transfer to West Ham, the 29-year-old will be well-known to Whites’ supporters.

The impact Byram may have had with the Hammers and at his final club Norwich was limited by injuries, so it’s fair to say that his career didn’t really take off as many had hoped.

His contract at Carrow Road expired in the summer, so it was inevitable that he would go. Byram was released as part of a major clear-out by the Canaries, and that turned out to be the case.

The defender is currently searching for his next team, and according to Football Insider, Leeds is interested in signing Byram.

He reportedly returned to the Yorkshire team for a trial with the intention of contesting for the left-back position if he impresses enough to secure a contract.

Would Sam Byram be a good signing for Leeds?

It’s hard to think that Leeds supporters will be overly thrilled about Bryam’s potential return to Elland Road given his lack of playing time over the years.

That does not, however, imply that he would not be a wise acquisition. First off, he is versatile enough to play in both full-back positions, which can be helpful because they clearly need extra cover down the left flank in particular.

He also has a connection to Leeds, having come through the academy, so it would mean a lot to him to pull on the shirt again.

Crucially, he is also a player that new boss Daniel Farke knows, as he worked with him for a few years at Norwich. The fact he is ready to bring Byram on trial means he values him as a player and a character, which is important.

When you factor in that Byram is available on a free transfer, it’s the sort of transfer that is low-risk for Leeds, and it could turn out to be smart business.

Leeds United summer transfer plans

Farke has a lot of work ahead of him in the coming weeks, and he reportedly wants up to six additional players to strengthen the team.

The club wants to balance its budget, so it is only natural that there would be exits as well. This was inevitable following relegation.

For Leeds, the left-back position has been a problem for some time, and whether Byram is the long-term solution is undoubtedly debatable. His experience in the Championship, though, could be helpful to the team, and he should be a good squad option.

It will therefore be intriguing to watch if he does manage to get a return to Elland Road, and it will be up to the player to perform well during the following week.

On August 5, Leeds will play Cardiff to open the Championship.
