Declan Rice has threatened to bring success back to Arsenal as a message to Premier League rivals Manchester City.
The midfielder’s transfer to the Emirates was announced on Saturday, with the Gunners team willing to spend up to £105 million for their man. Following the earlier additions of Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber from Chelsea and Ajax, respectively, Mikel Arteta’s team has now spent approximately £200 million so far this summer.
After dominating the Premier League table for so long before falling behind City, the North London club’s transfer activity is a declaration that they do not intend to view last season as a passing fad. The Pep Guardiola team did submit a proposal for Rice, but they decided against moving forward when they saw they would have to spend more than £100 million.
But Rice always seemed to have his sights set on the Emirates, and the former West Ham captain has vowed to use every means at his disposal to return championships to the city.
I’ve been observing Arsenal over the past few seasons and their trend, Rice told the Arsenal website. They finished sixth the season prior, not last, but you could see the type of play Mikel was introducing at the time.
With the exception of Man City, last season was a great season, easily outperforming every other team.
“That means a lot to me with Mikel and the way he works, the team, how young everyone is, the energy surrounding the club, and also the challenge of putting Arsenal back to where they belong. The fans definitely want that, I know.
“As a player, I came here really hungry to succeed more and to spend my best years at this fantastic club,” the player said.
When the two teams meet at Wembley for the Community Shield on Sunday, August 6, City will have the opportunity to assess Rice’s performance at Arsenal.
