Liverpool won’t pursue a deal for Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo because they think Chelsea is close to acquiring him, according to the Telegraph (subscription required).
Due to Fabinho’s impending departure to join Saudi club Al-Ittihad, the Reds are looking for a defensive midfielder. If Jordan Henderson and Fabinho both go, Liverpool Echo earlier in the day reported that they might enter the competition to sign Caicedo.
The most recent Telegraph report has dispelled that rumour. Everyone in the industry appears to be aware that the Ecuadorian international will be joining Chelsea soon.
Personal terms are not an issue because the Brighton midfielder has already said yes to a move to Stamford Bridge. It is up to the Blues to strike a deal with the Seagulls.
Good news for Chelsea
Although it has been obvious for some time that Chelsea will sign Caicedo, the club may have been concerned when Liverpool emerged as a potential rival for a player of the same calibre.
With that out of the way, the Blues can return their attention to quickly closing this deal. Key players must stay with the team for as long as possible during these training sessions now that preseason has begun.
Dealing with Brighton is never simple. It would be fantastic if the club did not maintain the player’s price tag. Instead, be prepared to bargain because this agreement is crucial for the team, particularly in light of Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante’s departures this summer.
After a wave of departures from that position this summer, Mauricio Pochettino does not have many options. The acquisition of Caicedo will provide Enzo Fernandez with a partner in centre midfield. Once that is established, the team’s manager can create the rest of the group around them.
