Manchester City received the highest payment of any club—$4.6 million (£3.51 million)—for releasing players for the World Cup in Qatar last year.

City’s settlement with world governing body Fifa came in just ahead of Barcelona’s $4.54 million and Bayern Munich’s $4.33 million.

Top five teams from Europe were Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, which each won $3.84 million.

Surprisingly, Ajax came in second with $3.50 million, surpassing Manchester United ($3.33 million) and Chelsea ($3.26 million).

They were closely followed by Juventus ($3.05m) and Atletico Madrid ($3.23m).

76% of the total $209 million distributed by Fifa to teams for the release of players for the 2022 World Cup went to European teams, or $159 million.

The largest winners were English clubs, which received $37.7 million, slightly shy of the total rewards to all teams from Asia and Concacaf, which is made up of teams from North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean.

47 English clubs in total received compensation, from Premier League winner City to League Two’s Wimbledon.

Tottenham ($2.83m) and Liverpool ($2.41m) were the next-highest-earning Premier League teams behind City, United, and Chelsea.
