With his victory over his opponent on Sunday of 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, he became just the second person to accomplish the feat with the Wimbledon title on the line.

The last male singles player to win Wimbledon who wasn’t named Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, or Andy Murray was Lleyton Hewitt in 2002. Over time, it became necessary for a rival born after the Australian’s victory to end the band’s run.

Carlos Alcaraz, who was born on May 5, 2003, put an end to the quartet’s domination at the grass-court major when he defeated Djokovic after four hours and 43 minutes, 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, to add to his 2022 US Open debut victory.

With the victory, Alcaraz became just the second player ever with a Wimbledon championship on the line to defeat the Serbian in a Grand Slam final. The roster of members

Roger Federer

When Djokovic and the Swiss faced off in the Belgrade native’s first major final, the Swiss had experience on his side. Federer defeated the opponent in their 2007 US Open match in straight sets to win his fourth title in a row at Flushing Meadows, but he was unable to prevail in any of their other four major final meetings, including three at the All England Club.

Rafael Nadal

Fellow Big 3 rival Nadal claimed their first tussle with a piece of Grand Slam hardware on the line at the 2010 US Open. Nadal would add a second triumph over Djokovic in New York three years later and his 3-0 mark in Roland Garros finals has propelled him to a narrow 5-4 edge overall in these match situations. During a sizzling tear, Djokovic claimed three straight major finals over the Spaniard (2011 Wimbledon, 2011 US Open, 2012 Australian Open).

Murray, Andy

The Brit, who was born a week before Djokovic, ended two droughts for his country by defeating his longtime nemesis. At the 2012 US Open, it took a stressful five-set triumph to become a major winner, and at Wimbledon in 2013, it took a dramatic three-set victory. Their previous five Grand Slam finals were all won by Djokovic, including all four at the Australian Open.

Stan Wawrinka

The Swiss has endured a lopsided 6-21 head-to-head record against Djokovic over his career. Despite that, Wawrinka stepped up in grand fashion by outfoxing Djokovic en route to all three of his major crowns. Two of those occurred in championship clashes, at 2015 Roland Garros and the 2016 US Open in seasons where Djokovic combined to win 18 titles.

Medvedev, Daniil

In order to become the first person in the Open Era to complete a calendar-year Grand Slam, Djokovic was under extreme pressure when he arrived to the 2021 US Open. With a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory, Medvedev—who had fallen to the Serb in that year’s Australian Open final—was able to deny Djokovic the opportunity to complete his attempt at making history.

Carlos Alcaraz

On Centre Court, nobody had beaten Djokovic in more than a decade. When the seven-time tournament winner sped to the first set in the 2023 Wimbledon final, it seemed that tendency was going to continue. But Alcaraz displayed maturity beyond his years to win a nail-biting five-set battle that included him winning a stunning 32-point, 27-minute game in set three.
