The 36-year-old has been given the fine, which comes to about GBP 6,117, according to the All England Lawn Tennis Club, for “racket abuse” during his loss against Carlos Alcaraz of Spain.

After failing to break Alcaraz and then dropping his own service game in the pivotal fifth set of an exciting match on Centre Court, Djokovic let his fury show.

The Serbian had already been flagged by umpire Fergus Murphy for a time infraction; nevertheless, he was promptly warned for a code infraction.

Djokovic admitted that he wasn’t proud of the incident and agreed to the punishment from the authorities.

When Djokovic was questioned about the code violations at the post-match press conference, he responded, “There’s not much to discuss about that.

“Frustration was the next one. In the second game, I had break points. Yes, there are a few very difficult points. He broke my serve with some incredible tennis, which was enough to win the fifth.

“The time violation was the first one, so yeah. Again, not a fantastic situation, but you just have to sort of accept it.

Djokovic became increasingly frustrated as the 20-year-old world number one capitalised on the situation to win by a score of 1-6 7-6 (6) 6-1 3-6 6-4 after four hours and 42 minutes.

He did this by denying his famous rival a 24th grand slam victory and an eighth Wimbledon victory.

Djokovic acknowledged Alcaraz for his victory but seems keen to move past the contest.

I’ve won some spectacular finals that I was really close to losing, as I mentioned on the court, Djokovic said.

“I suppose that losing a match like this is kind of a fair-and-square bargain for me here. It never gets easier to lose a close game, no matter how much it hurts.

“Thanks to Carlos.” Amazing composure when it matters most. For someone of his age to play attacking tennis, manage the pressure like this, and finish the match the way he did… In the last game, I thought my returns were excellent, but he just kept hitting these incredible shots.

Congratulations to him and his team, I say. What a competition for him. What a match to be a part of today. Yes, I do hope everyone enjoyed it.

“I continue,”
