Alisson Becker joined Liverpool five years ago today, so in honour of the occasion, we look back statistically on his incredible tenure with the team.
Alisson, who joined the Reds from AS Roma in the summer of 2018, has since contributed significantly to the victories the team has had under Jürgen Klopp, including Champions League and Premier League titles.
In 231 games, his remarkable record in goal indicates more than a century of clean sheets for the team, with the 100th clean sheet coming in May’s 1-0 loss to Brentford at Anfield.
He insisted modestly after that game, “This is not only a number of myself. “It comes from everyone—the boys, the staff, the goalkeeping coach department, etc. We collaborate towards a single objective, and maintaining a clean slate is one of those objectives.
Alisson will soon surpass David James because the No. 1 from the 1990s is currently only one ahead of him in the club’s history’s list of shutout keepers, which only six players have ever accumulated.
And only Ray Clemence (48.6%) and Pepe Reina (44.9%) are ahead of Alisson (43.7%) on a clean sheet against appearances basis.
The 30-year-old is currently 24th in the Premier League’s total clean sheet standings with 78, and he will be aiming to move up that list in the upcoming campaign. He is ranked fourth among the top 25 goalkeepers for total shutouts with a clean sheet percentage of 45.1.
Due to his 21 shutouts in 2018–19 and 20 in 2021–22, Alisson has won the Golden Glove award for the division twice in his five years on Merseyside thus far.
In addition to those individual honours, Liverpool won its first league championship in 30 years in 2019–20, with the stopper contributing with 13 shutouts and an assist.
Advanced statistical analysis allows us to examine player performance in greater detail. Goalkeepers can be evaluated based on their performance in relation to post-shot expected goal data, which use a model to assess how challenging it is to save shots.
Alisson has the most positive margin of any custodian in the top five leagues in Europe (England, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain), saving 10.1 goals more than an average custodian would have in 2022–23.
Only Jan Oblak of Atletico Madrid has played at least as many minutes and outperformed the Reds’ No. 1 throughout the course of his whole career.
While making saves and keeping a clean sheet will always be his main goals, we must also take into consideration what the Brazil international has to offer moving forward. Alisson has used his exceptional passing skills to set up a goal for Mohamed Salah in three of the last four seasons.
The collection of assists includes highlights from notable triumphs over Manchester City and both Manchester United. Only 11 players may surpass Alisson’s total of three assists for him, who have contributed to goals for Salah from twenty-four different players for Liverpool.
Some of his awards have previously been noted here, however if you scroll down the complete list, you’ll also see the item for “Liverpool Goal of the Season: 2020–21.”
Two things were true before to the Reds’ encounter against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns in May 2021: no goalkeeper had ever scored for the team and none had ever scored the game-winning goal in a Premier League contest.
Alisson put both of those realities to rest in the 95th minute with a well guided header. Nobody will ever forget that incredibly amazing moment.
Alisson was been dubbed “the Messi of goalkeepers” by Roberto Negrisolo, his goalkeeping coach at former team Roma, because “he is a goalkeeper who can define an era.”
And the No. 1 has unquestionably contributed to defining the Klopp era at Liverpool throughout his five years at Anfield thus far.
