Following a proposal from Bayern Munich, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has vowed to do everything in his ability to keep the essential Kyle Walker.

Following an approach from Bayern Munich, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has committed to fight to keep the “irreplaceable” Kyle Walker.

Walker’s spot in the starting lineup became less certain during last season’s treble-winning campaign, as a new system was implemented that frequently entailed fielding four center-backs, with one stepping into a midfield role in possession.

He still made 39 appearances but did not start the Champions League final victory over Inter Milan, and rumours about a possible switch to the Bundesliga champions quickly emerged.

Guardiola insists on keeping the 33-year-old, whose contract runs out next summer, stating, “He’s an incredibly important player for us.” He possesses unique qualities that are tough to discover anywhere in the globe. His unique characteristics are incomparable.

“Yes, we want him. I’m not sure what will happen in the end. I know we’re in contact, both teams, and we’ll battle for him just like Bayern would. I’m not sure how it will end.”

The two teams will clash in a pre-season friendly in Tokyo on Wednesday.

When asked if Walker would participate in the game during a pre-match press conference, Guardiola replied, “He’s our player.” We need to play against Bayern, and we need the greatest players, so why shouldn’t he?”

Following last season’s triumph, Guardiola’s two assistant managers, Rodolfo Borrell and Enzo Maresca, have left.

Long-term assistant Borrell has joined MLS club Austin FC as sports director, while Maresca has taken over as manager of relegated Leicester.

“We are looking for some people to help us, but I have enough quality in the (backroom) team and so far it is okay,” Guardiola added.

“I have a few people in mind, but I can’t say any more.”
