Liverpool are set to make a new bid for Southampton‘s Romeo Lavia, while there is increasing optimism that a deal can be agreed for the midfielder.
On Tuesday, the Reds had a bid worth roughly £37 million rejected as they began talks with their major defensive midfield target, who has already agreed personal terms.
According to The Athletic, negotiations between the clubs are still underway, and Liverpool is expected to return with a new and improved bid.
While Chelsea is also interested, there is “an increasing likelihood of a deal being agreed” with Liverpool, according to reports. According to the source, add-ons might be used to bring the Reds’ offer closer to Southampton’s valuation, which is considered to be around £50 million.
Lavia played the first half of the Saints’ pre-season match against Bournemouth on Tuesday evening at St. Mary’s Stadium, where manager Martin addressed questions regarding his player’s future.
“Considering what’s going on, I thought it was good for Romeo to play tonight and do all that stuff because he hasn’t had the minutes that other people have,” he remarked.
“You can request an update, but I can’t provide one because I don’t know.” I’m about to chat with Jason (Wilcox), but I’ve been practising for this game. I’ll only ever be honest with you guys, but I’m still not sure.”
Meanwhile, Belgian transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri believes that the Saints want “a fixed fee of £40m,” which is equal to the repurchase provision secured by Manchester City in the sale of Lavia last summer.
Lavia is set to take Fabinho’s place at the heart of Liverpool’s midfield. However, the 29-year-old Brazilian’s transfer to Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad has been called into question due to a stalemate in negotiations.
Jordan Henderson’s £12 million move to Al-Ettifaq, on the other hand, appears to be inevitable.
