Liverpool may not have been so wrong about Sadio Mane after a ruthless decision from Jurgen Klopp last summer.

urgen Klopp and Liverpool have proven Paul Merson wrong over Sadio Mane.

Mane became a legend at Liverpool over the course of his six years at the club, but he found himself expended last summer and was sold to Bayern Munich. The Bundesliga giants spent £35million to snap up Mane, and the transfer led to plenty of criticism from fans and pundits, given the important role he played in Klopp’s setup

Liverpool struggled without Mane last season, but the great bulk of their issues were in midfield and at the back, with far more serious reasons for the Reds’ disappointing record.

Following Liverpool’s dismal start, analyst Merson was eager to bring out what he saw as a mistake in the transfer of Mane.

“No one has started for Liverpool yet, and no one is playing well,” he stated on Sky Sports. “I thought it was the worst piece of business I’d seen in football in a long, long time with Sadio Mane.” It was one of the worst I’d ever witnessed.

“£30 million for a big-game player.” If I were the club’s owner, I would want to win the league, and you should keep Mane to give yourself the best opportunity of doing so. Allow him to leave for free next summer; he’s done enough for the club and the fee is only £30 million. That, I believe, has come back to bite them.”

However, Liverpool’s timing may have been better than initially imagined. Mane has only scored seven goals in 25 Bundesliga outings for Bayern, and he is already on the move. “Sadio Mané and Al Nassr, deal getting closer as reported last night — talks are at advanced stages today,” tweeted Fabrizio Romano.

“Deal is not yet finalized, but it has been progressing well since last night. Bayern and Al Nassr are in direct contact today to reach an agreement as soon as possible.”

The sale is reported to be valued roughly £35.2 million, so Bayern did not lose much money on it, although they were helped a little by the large sums given by Saudi Arabian teams. According to Transfermarkt, Mane was valued £51.3 million when Bayern signed him, but his dismal record in Germany has reduced that value to just £21.3 million. Liverpool might not have been too far off.
