Jurgen Klopp and Virgil van Dijk have been discussing Liverpool’s next captain after Jordan Henderson’s departure

Following Jordan Henderson’s transfer to Saudi Arabia, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has stated that he already knows who his future captain will be. Henderson and vice-captain James Milner both left Anfield this summer, leaving a significant hole to lead the dressing room – with one man expected to fill it.

In a news conference, Klopp stated, “I already know my decision, but I have to tell the players first.” Virgil will captain the team and start the game tomorrow. I’ve already made my decision, but I need to inform the players. I didn’t expect to be making that decision just a few weeks ago. Nobody has to be the next Jordan Henderson or James Milner. They are free to be themselves.”

Van Dijk took over as captain in Henderson’s absence for the friendly 4-4 draw with Greuther Furth and expressed his pride at being chosen as the interim captain.

“On the captaincy, nothing has been announced yet, so I can’t say much about it,” the defender continued. “It’s always a proud moment for me when I’ve done it previously.”

Henderson controversially completed a move to Saudi Arabian side Al Ettifaq to join Reds icon Steven Gerrard, which surprised Klopp. “Was I surprised when Henderson expressed a desire to move on?” “Of course,” he replied.

“We were together for eight years. He understood we wanted to keep him, but if he chose to leave, we weren’t going to throw rocks and stones in his path. It was all about how you reacted to it.”
