Jurgen Klopp has hinted that Darwin Nunez will start for Liverpool against Chelsea on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.
Nunez, 24, started and scored in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Leicester on Sunday, extending the Reds’ perfect pre-season record. Bobby Clark, Diogo Jota, and Ben Doak also scored for the Reds in Singapore.
However, Nunez’s performance once again drew attention as the Uruguayan continued his outstanding scoring streak, having now scored four times in three pre-season matches. He also added an assist to his brace in the Reds’ 4-4 draw with Greuther Furth on Monday.
Nunez’s other goal came in a 4-2 win over Karlsruher, as the forward settled into the Liverpool lineup following a difficult debut season. And now, Klopp has stated that the ex-Benfica forward would start against Chelsea on August 13.
Following his team’s victory over Leicester, Klopp stated, “Sometimes a player needs more time, that’s how it is.” With his speed, his goal being there, smelling it, and finishing it off, he is clearly a handful. He has looked extremely well in practice. Chelsea has two more games.”
Klopp has a variety of attacking options to pick from as they prepare to face Chelsea in the Premier League opener in two weeks. Jota and Mohamed Salah started the match against Leicester, with Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo on the bench.

He has been happy with his team during preseason as they continue to prepare for the season’s opening weekend. “They [attackers] are all a threat, they’re all good footballers – the ticket into the team will be defence readiness because you never hear about a team being really successful with sloppy defending, it just won’t happen,” Klopp added. “It’s the same for Darwin as it is for all the other strikers because I know about the quality they have and they need to do both, just like our other players have to do – defend and be influential in all offensive situations.”
Liverpool’s next pre-season match is against Bayern Munich, followed by a meeting against Darmstadt at Preston’s Deepdale on August 7. This is all ahead of the game against Chelsea, as well as matches against Bournemouth and Newcastle in the first month of the season.
