Canada, left, and Australia players line up for the national anthems before the Women's World Cup Group B soccer match between Australia and Canada in Melbourne, Australia, Monday, July 31, 2023.

According to FIFA, ticket sales for the Women’s World Cup had surpassed 1.678 million during the first 38 matches in Australia and New Zealand.

It stated in a statement Tuesday that overall attendance for those matches had reached 982,975, and that it will surpass the one million mark for spectators at Tuesday’s last Group E encounter between the United States and Portugal at Auckland, New Zealand’s 50,000-capacity Eden Park stadium.

The tournament has already broken attendance records for a Women’s World Cup

The previous record was set in 2015, when approximately 1.35 million people attended a 52-game tournament in Canada. The 2023 edition will involve 64 matches and will feature 32 teams.

On July 20, the first games set records for women’s soccer matches in both co-host countries. The attendance for New Zealand’s shock victory over Norway set a new national record of 42,137. Later same day, 75,784 people attended Australia’s 1-0 win over Ireland at Stadium Australia.

More over 49,000 spectators attended the Matildas’ 3-2 loss to Nigeria a week later in Brisbane.
