Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, has dismissed reports that the club is considering a loan deal for Kylian Mbappe.
France captain Mbappe has received a world-record £259 million bid from Saudi Arabia club Al Hilal, but Paris St Germain could also be open to a temporary move ahead of the potential of him leaving for nothing at the end of his current deal next year.
Chelsea and Barcelona are among the clubs attempting to put together agreements for Mbappe, who is said to have already agreed to join Real Madrid on a free transfer and so collect a signing-on fee of 160 million euros (£138 million).
Anfield has also been touted as a possible destination for the coming season, but Klopp has been quick to pour cold water on those rumours. Jurgen Klopp dismisses suggestions. Liverpool is considering a massive bid for Kylian Mbappe.
“We laugh about it,” Klopp told Sky Germany as he prepared the squad for the final match of their pre-season Asia tour against Bayern Munich in Singapore.
“I can say that I think he’s a really good player, but the financial conditions don’t suit us at all. I wouldn’t like to ruin the story now, but as far as I know, there’s nothing to it.
“It’s possible that someone else in the group is planning something to surprise me…That has not occurred in the eight years I’ve been here. That would be the first occasion.”
With Jordan Henderson departing to join Saudi club Al-Ettifaq, managed by former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, Virgil van Dijk is expected to captain the team next season.
Klopp admitted that he gave the Dutch defender the armband because of his leadership – and his good looks.
“Virgil has everything to wish for to be a captain of a football club,” Klopp said, according to the Liverpool website.
“Number one, he’s probably, let me have a think, definitely the best-looking captain in the Premier League, which is important for team pictures!
“But, of course, everything is there in terms of personality.” He aspires to be a leader, and he is one.
“He has to step up, as do all of us, because we were used to things being the way they were, and now we have to create something new – a new structure, a new culture – and that’s really exciting.” He must play a significant role in this.”
