Aaron Ramsdale has spoken out about Mikel Arteta’s reaction to his wife’s devastating miscarriage during the title chase, claiming “that’s a manager”

Ramsdale was an important member of Arsenal’s Premier League-winning side last season. However, with Arsenal leading the league and Ramsdale fresh off his first World Cup, his now-wife, Georgina Irwin, miscarried.

Ramsdale revealed in the Players’ Tribune, “After the high of climbing to the top of the Premier League table and going off to my first World Cup, my wife and I found out we were expecting our first child.”

“Mikel granted me a couple more days off after the World Cup, so we went on a little vacation… And, indeed, there is no other way to put it… My wife miscarried on the way home.

“Even now, there’s no way I can describe the agony of that six-hour flight back to London.” I simply want others to know that they are not alone if they are going through this.

“When we returned, I didn’t tell many people about what had happened.” Only my family, team members, and, of course, Mikel.”

Aaron Ramsdale was very impressed with Mikel Arteta's reaction to the news

However, Arteta’s reaction to the news was exactly what Ramsdale had hoped for: “He was fantastic about everything.” Even in the heat of the title chase, with so much pressure on the club, he asked if I needed some time off to deal with things.

“Mikel went above and beyond to ensure that I and my family were safe.” For me, that’s a manager.”

Three days later, Arsenal faced Tottenham in a critical north London derby, which the Gunners won 2-0 despite Ramsdale being kicked in the back by a Spurs fan at full time. Aaron Ramsdale discusses the sadness of his wife’s miscarriage and Mikel Arteta’s reaction

“Three days later, we were playing Spurs in the derby, and for me, that was the only way to get my mind off things,” the keeper explained. Football has always been my way out. I informed the management I wanted to play.

“It couldn’t have been a more perfect night.” We won 2-0 under the lights, and our away fans went absolutely crazy.

“You can see me beaming at the final kick of the ball if you watch the game back.” I went behind the goal to retrieve my water bottle, and never in a million years did I expect to be kicked in the back by a Tottenham fan.”

Ramsdale recently announced on social media that he and Georgina were expecting a child. He captioned a photo of a positive pregnancy test, “Half of me, half of you.” “Ramsdale, Baby”
