Southampton’s return to the Championship after an 11-year absence was off to a fantastic start.

Nathan Tella, one of the heroes of Burnley’s promotion campaign last season, impressed after only eight minutes. He cut in from the right and saw his bending shot deflect in off Armstrong’s head.

Southampton looked dominant in the first half, but they swiftly found in the second half that living at this level isn’t always easy. On 54 minutes, Gregory pounced quickest on a corner to prod home from close range.

But there would be a late twist at Hillsborough as Southampton found their way through on 87 minutes. As Ward-Prowse found Adams in the box, and he coolly found the net.
