We haven’t talked about it yet, but maybe it’s time.

What happens if Bayern Munich fails to sign Harry Kane?

According to sources in both England and Germany, Bayern Munich has made an offer of up to 100 million euros for Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane and has given Daniel Levy till midnight to accept. This is it, people – either the move is completed within the next few hours/days, or Kane will never come to Bayern. We’ve already explored the advantages and disadvantages of this signing, but now that the finish is in sight… what if it doesn’t go our way?

What if Bayern Munich fail to get Harry Kane? Well, the consequences will be as follows:

An impending lineup crisis

Thomas Tuchel wants — nay, needs — new striker. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting has spent more time injured than fit for the last six months, and even if he were in tip top condition, he’s hardly a world class replacement to Robert Lewandowski. Mathys Tel has all the signs of becoming a top center forward one day, but he cannot be expected to lead the lineup at 18 for a team that wants to win the Champions League.

If Bayern Munich fails to sign Kane, the team will be in trouble. Goals were hard to come by in the preseason games, and with Choupo and Thomas Muller both injured, things may get very bad without a top-tier player like Kane in the roster. Naturally, this would necessitate the search for a replacement.

But who?

The alternatives

Chelsea FC is interested in Dusan Vlahovic and is willing to deal Romelu Lukaku and cash for him. Juventus is ready to accept that offer and is negotiating a price. Could Bayern hijack that bid and go after Vlahovic? How much would that set you back? It’s difficult to say at this point, but the club would have to pay Juventus for missing out on their chosen striker choice in Lukaku.

Randal Kolo Muani of Eintracht Frankfurt is another alternative, but he is not perfect. He’s far too pricey given his long contract with Frankfurt, and his playstyle isn’t nearly what Bayern want. Victor Osimhen might be a better fit, but Napoli wants far too much money.

That leaves Niclas Fullkrug, a player who may be signed quickly and serve as a target man for Bayern Munich this season. That’s… not good. Fullkrug won the Bundesliga top scorer award last season, but he’s no Kane, Osimhen, or Kolo Muani. He’s a late bloomer at 30 years old with a shaky injury record. At that point, you’d be better off betting on Mathys Tel and hoping Choupo-Moting stays healthy.
