Rasmus Hojlund, a Danish striker, moved from Serie A team Atalanta to Manchester United on Saturday for a reported £72 million.

The forward has agreed to a five-year contract with a one-year extension option.

The 20-year-old was introduced to the crowd at Old Trafford before United’s preseason friendly against French team Lens. He scored 10 goals in 34 games for Atalanta last season.

In his six games for Denmark, he has six goals.

Hojlund stated on the team’s website that he has supported Manchester United since he was a little child and that he once dreamed of leaving Old Trafford as a player.

“I am really delighted about the chance to make that goal come true, and I’m keen to repay the club for their confidence in me.

“I know I’m ready to take this step up and play with this group of world-class players, but it’s still early in my career.

“After speaking with the manager, I realized that this setting would be ideal for my growth. The chance to work with one of the top coaches in the world excites me.

Given that Anthony Martial is the only known center-forward at the club and is prone to injury, his arrival puts an end to manager Erik ten Hag’s search for a striker as he attempts to strengthen United’s front line.

The signing takes Ten Hag’s summer spending to £150 million as he joins Andre Onana and Mason Mount at Old Trafford.

United chief executive John Murtough said: “Rasmus is a truly exceptional talent; he possesses technical and physical attributes which rank him among the best players in the world for his age group.

“Working with Erik ten Hag and his coaches will give Rasmus the ideal development platform; everyone across the club will ensure that he is given the time and all the support necessary to realize his enormous potential.”

After starting his work at HUI and Brondby, Hojlund relocated to Copenhagen in 2020. In 11 games of the Europa Conference League during his rookie season, he scored five goals.

Due to his success, he was recruited by Sturm Graz in the Austrian Bundesliga in January 2022, where he scored 12 goals in 21 appearances before joining Atalanta for £14.6 million.
