Aitana Bonmati scored twice - her second and third goals at this World Cup - to help Spain romp to victory

Aitana Bonmati scored twice as Spain defeated Switzerland 5-1 in the Women’s World Cup on Saturday, advancing to the quarter-finals for the first time in their history.

Switzerland won Group A with three clean sheets, but it only took five minutes for midfielder Bonmati to get through their defence for La Roja’s first goal.

Additional goals from her, Alba Redondo, Laia Codina, and Jenni Hermoso completed the rout, much to the joy of the 43,217-strong crowd – a record for a women’s or men’s soccer game in New Zealand.

Bonmati, Redondo, and Hermoso have all scored three goals so far in the competition.

 

Codina’s 45th-minute goal was a reprieve for the defender, who had previously scored a disastrous own goal with a throw back from 40 yards that soared past stunned goalie Cata Coll.

The match saw 43,217 spectators inside the Eden Park Outer Oval in Auckland, in what was a record attendance for a women's or men's game in New Zealand

Spain defeated Switzerland 5-1 to go to the Women’s World Cup quarterfinals.

Spain finished second in Group C, defeating Costa Rica and Zambia by a total score of 8-0 before falling to Japan 4-0 on Monday.

 

Coach Jorge Vilda made five changes to his lineup for Saturday’s game, including the departure of keeper Maria Rodriguez in favour of Coll.

 

The Spaniards will now face the winner of the round of 16 match between the Netherlands and South Africa on Sunday.

The Swiss finished 20th, matching their best World Cup finish. They also exited the World Cup in the round of 16 in their only prior appearance in 2015.

Spain head through to the quarter-finals to face the winners of Netherlands vs South Africa in Wellington on Friday, kick-off at 2am.

Switzerland’s World Cup dreams are over after their first defeat of the tournament, despite topping their group to set up this last-16 meeting with Spain.
