Arsenal has been widely chastised for overreacting to their Community Shield victory over Manchester City.

The Gunners grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat after equalizing in the 101st minute, then winning on penalties moments later.

Mikel Arteta was mocked for going nuts on the touchline after Leandro Trossard’s deflected attempt trickled past Stefan Ortega, with some saying he looked like he’d just won the Champions League.

“Arteta is completely out of control. “How embarrassing,” one fan tweeted. “Arteta celebrating like he’s just won the Champions League lol what a joke,” said another.

Others used social media to taunt ecstatic Gunners fans, with one person writing, “It’s the Community Shield, calm down lads.”

“Arsenal fans are going crazy over a completely meaningless trophy.” Another said, “Arsenal’s trophy cabinet is so bare they think the Community Shield is actually important haha.”

The players themselves were chastised, particularly after the trophy was lifted. “I don’t mean to be the celebration police, but Arsenal’s team all look far too happy considering they only won a non-competitive friendly match,” a rival fan commented.

An Arsenal fan agreed, writing: “Look at the smiles on their faces. On the one hand, good for them. On the other hand, it’s only the Community Shield boys. You nearly won the Prem a few weeks ago, this shouldn’t make you that happy.”

The game was cagey, with City having more possession and creating the majority of the chances.

Cole Palmer put Pep Guardiola’s team ahead on 77 minutes with a superb curling attempt from the edge of the box, but the Gunners equalized in the 11th minute of injury time, despite the fact that eight minutes were added.
