Arsenal have beaten Premier League rivals Manchester City on penalties to win the Community Shield final.

Arsenal won the Community Shield on penalties after defeating Manchester City.

After Cole Palmer curled the ball past a despairing Aaron Ramsdale in the 77th minute, Pep Guardiola’s team appeared to have won the game in normal time.

The 21-year-old had only been on the field for 15 minutes, but he quickly returned his manager’s faith. Phil Foden performed a stunning midfield spin before driving at the heart of Arsenal’s defence and sending a pass towards Palmer.

 

The ball was intercepted but returned to Palmer, who took one look before finishing sumptuously with his left foot.

But in the 11th minute of stoppage time, Leandro Trossard stepped up and saw his effort take a wicked deflection of Manuel Akanji and past Stefan Ortega in goal.

A straight penalty shootout ensued, with Kevin de Bruyne and Rodri missing from the spot. While Arsenal scored all four of theirs to lift the trophy.
