Coco Gauff, a 19-year-old American, defeated Greece’s Maria Sakkari 6-2, 6-3 to win the women’s title.

“It was really tough a couple weeks ago,” said world number seven Gauff, who was knocked out of Wimbledon in the first round last month but did not drop a set in the Citi Open. “We were all feeling it, and I’m glad I was able to recover.”

Evans, the British number two, needed four break points to win the first set before play was delayed at 2-2 in the second due to rain and lightning.

After the restart, Evans glided through his remaining service games, saving four break points in the match’s penultimate game.

“The last game kind of summed up my week.” “I got out of trouble, and it was an amazing week,” said Evans, who began the event on a seven-match losing streak.

“I wasn’t playing well, and I wasn’t satisfied with my game.”

He is the first British winner of the tournament since Tim Henman in 2003.
