Jurgen Klopp admits that Alexis MacAllister should not have to play as Liverpool’s defensive midfielder while the club pursues Romeo Lavia.

Southampton reportedly rejected a third bid worth over £46 million to the Reds on Tuesday.

Despite their relegation last season, the Championship club is thought to be holding out for £50 million for the 19-year-old.

Summer signing Mac Allister was deployed in a deeper role as Klopp’s side beat Darmstadt in their final pre-season game before the Premier League kicks off this weekend.

Liverpool’s midfield was heavily criticized during last season’s difficult campaign, and it has since been revamped.

Argentina international Andres Iniesta and Dominik Szoboszlai have come, but Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Naby Keita, James Milner, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have all left. Jurgen Klopp speaks on Midfilder build-up after Romeo Lavia bid rejected

While Mac Allister and Szoboszlai both bring something unique to the table, neither is a well-known defensive midfielder.

Klopp stated following the victory against Preston North End’s Deepdale: “We have to try it and test a couple of different things.” Yes, Alexis can definitely play in a close formation. Should he play there if he’s alone?

“No. But now he’s shown how excellent a footballer he is and how well he understands the game because he played here for the first time, at least for us, and he did incredibly well.”
