West Ham and Manchester United are said to have reached a deal in principle for the transfer of Harry Maguire.
The England international has dropped down the pecking order at Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag and has been made available for transfer, with the Hammers showing interest all summer.
According to the Athletic, the two clubs have agreed on a £30 million cost for the defender. The two clubs’ verbal agreement is still subject to final, important points on deal structure, but West Ham is sure they can agree on personal terms with Maguire and his camp.
Maguire is still the most expensive defender in history after moving from Leicester City for £80 million in 2019, but the 30-year-old has failed to live up to that price tag in his four seasons in Manchester.
The defender was stripped of the United captaincy earlier this summer after making only eight Premier League starts last season, with ten Hag preferring Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as his first-choice center-backs.
The Red Devils have made three acquisitions this summer – Andre Onana, Rasmus Hojlund, and Mason Mount – and are now looking to unload their fringe players who no longer have a future at the club, Maguire being one of them.
West Ham meanwhile banked £105million from the sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal and are now starting to see some of that cash being spent on new signings. Ajax and Mexico midfielder Edson Alvarez is expected to join for around £35million this week, with Maguire potentially the next through the door after him.
The Hammers get their Premier League campaign underway with a trip to the Vitality Stadium to face AFC Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.
