Arsenal and Chelsea have been handed a new reason to pursue a deal for Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus this summer. According to the Athletic, Brighton have already signed an agreement in principle with Ajax to sign Kudus, but the transaction has stalled.

The Seagulls will pay a club record sum of €40 million (£34.5 million) for the brilliant playmaker. However, the Ghana international is yet to reach an agreement with Brighton on personal terms.

Last week, Roberto De Zerbi provided an update on Kudus’ potential move to Amex Stadium. “I’m not sure what the situation is with that contract… “We have a lot of strikers,” remarked De Zerbi at a press conference.

“We will see at the end of the window,” he continued. According to Voetbal International, a deal has still to be finalized, and the 48-hour period for Kudus to make a choice on a personal agreement with Brighton has now passed.

This does not guarantee that he will remain at Ajax, but it does return control to the Dutch club and allows them to negotiate a larger sum with each passing day. It also allows Arsenal and Chelsea to re-enter the race for his signature, despite potentially facing a higher asking price than Ajax’s original £34 million value.

The Gunners still need to sell a number of players to create finances for a possible move to buy Kudus, while Chelsea remain focused on signing Moises Caicedo. Sven Mislintat, Ajax’s sports director, issued an update on the 23-year-old’s future earlier this summer.

“There are clubs that have informally enquired about him,” he told Ajax Life via Metro. “There is no fixed deadline,” he told Aglemeen Dagblad, “but there are agreements we must have to get replacements if we have not already done so proactively.”

“The best thing is that if Kudus and (Edson) Alvarez stay, we keep two top players.” But it’s also feasible that one or both of them will go,” he added. Edson Alvarez has now joined West Ham, while Kudus’ future remains undecided.

“It is critical for us that our relationship with the athletes remains positive. This can be accomplished by being open and applying sound concepts. As the deadline approaches, the transfer price, for example, rises,” Mislintat explained.
