According to ESPN, Chelsea is close to signing US midfielder Tyler Adams after activating his £20 million ($25.5 million) buyout clause.
The Leeds United midfielder is set to arrive in London on Thursday for a medical, and Chelsea are hoping he will be registered in time for Sunday’s Premier League opening against Liverpool.

Leeds did not want to lose Adams, but when the Yorkshire club was demoted from the Premier League last season, the condition in his contract became operative.
Adams joined from RB Leipzig in July 2022 and only made 26 appearances across all competitions, due in part to his season being cut short in March due to a hamstring injury that necessitated surgery.
The 24-year-old will bolster an area of the pitch where new head coach Mauricio Pochettino has been desperate for reinforcements after losing N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Mason Mount, as well as Denis Zakaria, who returned to Juventus after a loan spell.
Meanwhile, Chelsea continue to pursue a deal for Brighton’s Moises Caicedo after having their first two offers rejected, the most recent of which was for £80 million. Brighton’s asking price remains in excess of £100 million.
Liverpool is also interested in Caicedo, while the two teams are vying for Southampton’s Romeo Lavia.
