The Reds’ last offer was worth £46 million in total, following initial bids of £34 million plus £4 million in add-ons and an overall package worth £42 million. All three fell short of the Saints’ £50 million asking price. While conversations between the two teams continue, it has turned into an unwelcome drawn-out transfer story.

As a result, their chase of Lavia has intensified, with the adolescent already regarded as a long-term replacement for their now-departed Brazilian.

Lavia was an unused substitute in Southampton’s Championship opener against Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night, while he was completely absent from the Saints’ matchday squad in their shock League Cup first round defeat to Gillingham.
