West Ham have completed the £35.4 million transfer of Mexico international Edson Alvarez from Ajax.

The Europa Conference League champions have signed the 25-year-old to a contract until June 2028.  Following the transfer of former captain Declan Rice to Arsenal. , he bolsters the Hammers’ midfield options.

‘The midfield position was one we were very keen to reinforce this summer – and Edson will compliment the other options we have in that department,’ West Ham manager David Moyes said on the club’s website.

‘He’s a seasoned international who has had remarkable success for both club and country during his career.’

Alvarez, who began his career with Mexico City-based Club America, joins the Premier League after winning two Eredivisie titles with Ajax over four seasons.

He has 69 caps for his country, winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2019 and 2023, as well as going to the World Cup in 2018 and 2022.

‘It’s a really sentimental period in my career,’ he says. ‘Joining a club like West Ham is a dream come true for me and my family.

‘The Premier League is a special league, the best league in the world, and I believe my style will fit well there.

 

‘I now have a responsibility to West Ham and the West Ham family, and I am willing to go to any length for the shirt.’

 

West Ham, who will compete in the Europa League this season, kick off the new season against Bournemouth on Saturday.
