Carlo Ancelotti has underlined that Real Madrid has complete faith in Ukraine international Andriy Lunin as they assess their goalkeeping alternatives following the injury to Thibaut Courtois.

After tearing his ACL in training, Courtois is due to undergo surgery and is anticipated to miss the majority of the forthcoming season, leaving Madrid with Lunin as their only senior goalie.

As  reported after Courtois’ injury, Madrid has not ruled out keeping Lunin as their main keeper, however club officials are compiling a list of potential recruits as they look to reinforce the position once more.

After making touch with free agency David de Gea, Madrid concentrated their efforts on Sevilla keeper Yassine Bounou, who is looking to move this summer.

However, with Lunin ready to start the season in goal for Real Madrid against Athletic Club on Saturday, Ancelotti reaffirmed his faith in the 24-year-old.

“Emotionally, it was not a good day,” Ancelotti said during a press conference. “We are disappointed on a personal level because it is an injury to a key player, but these things happen in football.”

“We wish [Courtois] a speedy recovery and have complete faith in Lunin, who is a fantastic keeper.” He performed admirably during the preseason. We have complete faith in him and believe he is gifted. What he lacks is experience, which everyone lacks, but he will take it game by game.”

When asked if he wanted a new signing, Ancelotti replied, “We have time until August 31.” Our keepers have potential behind Lunin, but they are young. We will consider it. Fran [Gonzalez] is seventeen years old.

“If we sign a new keeper, it will be for numbers because we believe in Lunin.” “I have complete faith in Lunin.”

Ancelotti concluded with a straightforward appraisal of the type of goalie he would want to see Madrid acquire.

“One that stops the ball with his hands,” the Italian quipped. “First and foremost, one that makes saves. That is what I ask of all goalkeepers. Let them be good with their hands. When it comes to feet, it’s better to have a striker.”
