Erling Haaland has spoken out about his furious conversation with Pep Guardiola at the end of Manchester City’s win over Burnley.

The Premier League champions began their title defence with a 3-0 victory over newly promoted Burnley on the opening night of the season at Turf Moor, with Haaland scoring twice in the first half before Rodri clinched victory with 15 minutes remaining.

However, Haaland’s two goals were insufficient to please his manager, who was animated as he went off the field with his striker and pushed the camera away.

“That was from the last action, when I got a little irritated because Bernardo didn’t play me,” Haaland explained after the game to Sky Sports. “So [Guardiola] was mad at me.”

“He wants the ball to him all the time, man-to-man, ‘give me the ball in behind and I’ll do it,'” City manager Pep Guardiola said of the incident.

“But when you only have two minutes left and Kovacic goes in behind and loses the ball, and Rodri loses the ball, and Erling wants that ball – Bernardo was correct not to give him that ball.”

Haaland scored 52 goals in his debut year in England, 36 of which came in the Premier League, as he wasted little time settling in at City and propelling them to domestic and European trophies.

After his brace against Burnley, the 23-year-old was asked if he might match that total this season, but he made it plain that his priority was to show everyone just how dominant City can be.

“I can’t think about it too much,” Haaland stated.

“If you think about it, I think you’ll go insane in your head.” For me, it’s all about the restart; it appears that people forget quickly in this game that we’re Treble winners and everything.

“We have to try and chase things down again.”
