Jordan Spieth was the leader after round one of the FedEx St Jude Championship, where he shot 63 and was seven under par.
He leads Tom Kim by one shot going into round two in Memphis and stated he has been improving on his putting.

“There was a lot of putting.” I performed admirably at the British. “From tee to green, I played well enough to win,” he added later.

“I didn’t feel like I messed up a lot of my lines.” On the greens, I just couldn’t get the line and speed to match.

“Now we’re in slopey Bermuda, and very fast slopey Bermuda, where I feel a little more at ease picking lines and feeding the ball in using gravity.”

“I think that helped, along with doing as much work as I could in Texas right now, which is really from 7:00 a.m. to noon before it’s almost unbearably hot.”

“I just tightened up a few things.” I attempted to play a lot only to get points. I had taken a break from playing for a while, and I believe it helped a little in the past couple weeks.”

England’s Tommy Fleetwood and Aaron Rai are the best of the British contingent, finishing on four under par on Thursday.

Rory McIlroy is a shot back on three under after combining three bogeys with four birdies and an eagle.
