Klopp reveals that Liverpool and Brighton have agreed on the transfer of Moises Caicedo for British record fee.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp announced on Friday that the club has struck a deal with Brighton to buy Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo.
The agreement is said to be for 110 million pounds ($140 million), which would be a record fee for a transfer in the United Kingdom.
Klopp reveals that Liverpool and Brighton have agreed on the transfer of Moises Caicedo for British record fee.
“The deal with the club (Brighton) is agreed,” Klopp said at a news conference ahead of Liverpool’s first Premier League game against Chelsea on Sunday.
Caicedo, 21, has yet to agree on personal terms or undergo a medical test.
Caicedo’s arrival would complete a massive offseason reshuffling of Liverpool’s midfield, which had also seen the arrivals of Alexis Mac Allister — also from Brighton — and Dominik Szoboszlai from Leipzig. Five midfielders have departed Anfield this summer, including Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.
It would exceed Arsenal’s initial sum of 100 million pounds plus add-ons paid to West Ham for Declan Rice last month. That initial amount was the same as Manchester City paid Aston Villa for Jack Grealish in 2021, a British record.
Caicedo has had an incredible and swift ascent since joining Brighton from Ecuadorian team Independiente del Valle in 2021. He was on loan to Beerschot in Belgium for the first half of the 2021-22 season.
He swiftly became one of the most sought-after midfielders in English soccer, with Chelsea retaining a long-term interest and making repeated approaches this offseason — only to be seemingly outbid by Liverpool for Caicedo’s contract.
Caicedo is a defensive midfielder who is good on the ball, fast to cover ground, and an aggressive presser. All of these qualities are desired by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who will be hoping that his rejigged midfield can inspire a resurgent title drive after his team ended outside the top four previous season.
If the deal goes through, Brighton would have collected about 150 million pounds ($190 million) from Liverpool this summer for Mac Allister and Caicedo, continuing the club’s approach of buying cheaply and selling for large money.
