Paris Saint-Germain has completed the signing of Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembélé, the French club announced on Saturday.

The French club’s initial plan was to pay the €50 million ($54.9 million) buyout provision in the player’s contract, which expired at the end of July. Dembélé rejected that plan and pushed the clubs to reach an arrangement that was acceptable to all parties. However, the final amount is believed to be around €50 million, according to ESPN on Wednesday.

“I’m delighted to be joining Paris Saint-Germain and can’t wait to start playing for my new club,” Dembélé stated on the club’s official website. “I hope I can continue to grow here and make all of the club’s fans proud.”

The Ligue 1 winners had been interested in Dembélé for some time, and Barcelona manager Xavi was desperate to keep the winger but accepted the large transfer fee would help ease the club’s financial problems.

Dembélé joined Barcelona in 2017 to replace Neymar in a €105 million trade from Borussia Dortmund, but he failed to make the impact he hoped for, scoring 40 goals in 185 games.

Dembélé almost departed Camp Nou as a free agent last summer, but he eventually agreed to a contract extension until 2024.

The Catalan club has Raphinha and Ferran to cover his likely departure, but Xavi has publicly requested extra reinforcements, and Dembélé’s departure is expected to disrupt Barca’s transfer plans.
