Liverpool have agreed to pay £60 million for  Southampton midfielder Roméo Lavia. Chelsea are also interested in signing Lavia, and Liverpool must persuade the 19-year-old to join them at Anfield.

Jürgen Klopp is anxious to bolster his midfield and has been stung by Chelsea’s success in signing Moisés Caicedo from Brighton. Caicedo, who is scheduled for a physical, is seeking a British record fee of £115 million.

Chelsea are also interested in signing Lavia and made a £55 million approach for him last Friday. However, Liverpool’s need for midfield reinforcements is pressing, and the club has refused to give up on the midfielder, who wants to leave Southampton following their relegation from the Premier League.

Liverpool increased their bid for Lavia on Sunday night, after earlier refusing to go above £45 million. The concern for Klopp will be that there are hints that Lavia would prefer a move to Chelsea.

The Blues could still trump Liverpool to his signature, which would be a bitter blow not just to their midfield rebuild this summer, but perhaps also to their credibility in the transfer market.
