Michael Owen disagrees with Roy Keane over Mohamed Salah’s angry reaction
Former Liverpool forward Michael Owen expressed his amazement at Mohamed Salah’s substitution during his former club’s 1-1 tie with Chelsea.
On Sunday, the Reds were held to a 1-1 draw by Mauricio Pochettino’s side at Stamford Bridge. Salah set up Luis Diaz for the game’s first goal, but Axel Disasi equalized eight minutes before halftime.
Salah was replaced by Jurgen Klopp, , along with Diaz, with 13 minutes of normal time remaining, as youngsters Harvey Elliott and Ben Doak were brought on. The Egyptian was furious with his manager’s decision, ripping off his protective tape and hurling it on the floor.
Salah then gave his substitute a high-five before heading straight towards the Liverpool bench. Klopp, who stayed in the technical area and did not approach the attacker, did not shake hands with him.
After the game, Sky Sports analyst Roy Keane told Salah to “sit down and shut up,” but former England player Owen sympathized with the Egypt captain and explained why he understood the 31-year-old’s reaction.
“I was surprised, yeah,” Owen explained to Premier League Productions. “I understand his reaction as well. I was absolutely taken aback. Mo Salah performed admirably, in my opinion.
“It was his assist that led to the goal. A fantastic help. His right-footed curling shot hit the crossbar. He was literally inches offside and scored; things could have been so different.
“He had a keen appearance. He is an amazing club legend. Every season, he scores dozens and dozens of goals. And to bring him off, I was extremely astonished for a 17-year-old (Doak).”
