Arsenal manager Arteta seeks Manchester City player to solve’serious’ issue – but there’s one ‘trouble’

According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal is interested in Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte after Jurrien Timber suffered a catastrophic injury.

The Gunners issued a statement on Monday confirming Timber’s knee injury and stating that the Dutch international will see a specialist to ascertain the degree of the damage.

It comes following rumours that he could be out for several months for Arsenal after suffering the injury in their 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

“Further to his substitution during our match against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Jurrien Timber has received extensive assessments and scans which have confirmed he has sustained an injury to his right knee,” Arsenal said in a statement.

“In the coming days, Jurrien will undergo a more detailed assessment and review with a consultant to determine the full extent of the injury and the next steps.” In due course, another update will be released.

“Everyone at the club will be focused on supporting Jurrien at this time.”

And now, according to transfer analyst Romano, Man City defender Laporte, who has played 180 games for the Citizens, has been linked to Arsenal, although Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta may struggle to convince City to trade another player to their Premier League rivals.

“The knee injury for Jurrien Timber is a serious problem for Arsenal, so we’ll have to see who could be on their list now,” Romano said in his Caught Offside column. We wish Timber the best of luck; let’s hope it’s not a long-term injury, but it appears to be a major one, therefore Arsenal will hunt for a replacement.

“Earlier in the summer, Arsenal looked at bringing in a ‘traditional’ centre-back, more than a versatile player like Timber, who can play everywhere in defence.

“One player they like is Aymeric Laporte – the rumours are true in the sense that he is liked by Arsenal, but the problem is that Manchester City don’t want to sell another player to Arsenal, so let’s see if Arsenal return for Laporte or if they try to replace Timber with a full-back instead.” Mikel Arteta will be part in internal conversations about this.

“Despite this news, my understanding is that Kieran Tierney’s situation remains unchanged – the Scottish left-back remains available on the market, but Arsenal insists on a permanent transfer rather than a loan deal.”

“Jeremy Doku is an important target for Manchester City,” Romano said of Man City’s targets before the transfer window closes. They are negotiating personal terms with the player’s camp as well as his remuneration. The player wishes to join, therefore City must negotiate with Rennes, although as previously stated, Doku is on City’s list.

“Manchester City will definitely make another bid for Lucas Paqueta.” West Ham are now negotiating a deal for Mohammed Kudus in the event that Paqueta leaves for Manchester City.

“Kudus has been attracting interest all summer, particularly from Brighton. However, Brighton rejected the inclusion of a release clause in the deal and also there were some other issues – the player was not happy with the proposal and Brighton decided to move on. They don’t like these kind of situations.”
