United officials said the club wanted to release the findings of a six-and-a-half month inquiry into Greenwood before the start of the season, but they delayed the disclosure. Manchester United issues a statement regarding Mason Greenwood.

Charges against Greenwood, 21, were dropped by Greater Manchester Police on February 2. Greenwood was accused of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviours, and violence. He consistently refuted all claims.

Greenwood has not played for United since January 22, 2022, and he has also not returned to the club’s training grounds. Chief executive Richard Arnold will make the final choice on Greenwood.

“Following the dismissal of all charges against Mason Greenwood in February 2023, Manchester United has conducted a thorough investigation into the allegations made against him,” United said in a statement released Wednesday afternoon.

“We have heard from numerous people with direct involvement or knowledge of the case, and we have drawn on extensive evidence and context that are not in the public domain.”

“Throughout this process, the alleged victim’s welfare and perspective have been central to the club’s inquiries, and we respect her right to lifelong anonymity.”

“We also have obligations to Mason as an employee, as a young man who has been with the club since he was seven years old, and as a new father with a partner.”

“The fact-finding phase of our investigation is now complete, and we are nearing the conclusion of Mason’s future.”

“Contrary to media speculation, that decision has yet to be made and is currently under intense internal deliberation.” The Chief Executive Officer is ultimately responsible.

“When a decision is made, it will be communicated and explained to the club’s internal and external stakeholders.”

“This has been a difficult case for everyone associated with Manchester United, and we understand the strong feelings it has elicited based on the limited evidence available in the public domain.” We appeal for your patience while we complete the last stages of this well planned process.”

Greenwood consistently refuted all claims. Greenwood stated in a statement in February, “I am relieved that this matter is now over and would like to thank my family, loved ones, and friends for their support.”

“There will be no further commentary at this time.”

As Greenwood continues to practice away from the club, United has been receiving data from his training sessions. Since the allegations were dismissed, the forward has not returned to United’s Carrington training base.

Greenwood is under contract with United until 2025, with the option of an extra year, and he last appeared for the club on January 22, 2022, in a 1-0 win over West Ham.

Greenwood has appeared in 129 games for United, scoring 35 goals. In September 2020, he made his England debut against Iceland.
