The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has confirmed that two star performers from last season’s Champions League-winning side have joined Lionel Messi in the three-man list for the Men’s Player of the Year award, following Manchester City’s maiden Super Cup trophy with a thrilling win over Sevilla in Europe’s traditional curtain-raiser for the season 2023-2024. UEFA announced the top three nominees for the 2022/23 Men’s Player of the Year on Thursday.

Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland, along with Lionel Messi, are among the three contenders for the men’s UEFA player of the year award, European football’s governing body announced Thursday. The trio received the most votes from a jury comprising of UEFA competition coaches, European national team coaches, and a select group of journalists.

The winner will be announced at the Champions League group stage draw event on August 31 in Monaco.
Last season, Haaland finished as the Champions League’s top scorer with 12 goals, while De Bruyne — who had a league-leading seven assists — was instrumental in City winning the trophy for the first time.
Messi, who left PSG for Inter Miami this summer, led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup, completing his collection of significant trophies. Pep Guardiola of Manchester City is one of the contenders for coach of the year after leading the club to a treble of the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League last season.
He is joined by Italians Simone Inzaghi, who led Inter Milan to the Champions League final, and Luciano Spalletti, who broke Napoli’s 33-year title drought.
