Romano explains why Chelsea missed out on Michael Olise signing

Crystal Palace are unhappy with Chelsea’s pursuit of Michael Olise, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Crystal Palace were unhappy with Chelsea’s move for Michael Olise, according to Fabrizio Romano, because the Blues triggered the midfielder’s release clause.

The former academy player had previously accepted to terms with the West Londoners on personal terms, and the Blues were pushing for a transfer. However, Palace have now renewed his contract at Selhurst Park, effectively putting an end to any summer transfer speculation. Romano explains why Chelsea missed out on Michael Olise signing

They were unhappy with way the Blues began negotiations with them after activating the 21-year-old Palace. Chelsea, they felt, had ‘stepped the line’ in terms of transfer etiquette.

Palace are unhappy with how Chelsea approached them for Olise

Chelsea is looking to add depth to their right wing and identified Olise as a player who can play in both positions. In his exclusive Caught Offside column, Romano confirmed this, saying:

“Chelsea remain busy, and it is true that Crystal Palace are dissatisfied with the Blues’ approach to the Michal Olise deal.” But it’s also worth noting that Chelsea believes they did everything correctly, acted properly, and did nothing wrong.”

There doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with what we did from the face of it, considering we activated his £35 million release clause in accordance with standard transfer protocol.

Since the previous update, Romano has added that Crystal Palace threatened to take Chelsea to court, which threw the Blues off guard. What went wrong is perplexing. Perhaps the general public is unaware of the complexities that occurred behind the scenes.

Even the player was open to a move and has shunned Manchester City, which speaks something about our market clout. If we had the player on our side and a clause in place, there shouldn’t have been anything stopping us from closing the deal. However, it appears that there was more to it than what was made known to the fans.

We have been going bonkers in the transfer market ever since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over. Perhaps it is time to take a breather after this summer. We have signed a plethora of players on long contracts, so it must have been done with the future in mind. If we have to close the spending spree with one more attacking signing, Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson would be a stunning alternative.
