Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino is hoping Carney Chukwuemeka will not be another addition to the  club’s long-term injured list.

The 19-year-old midfielder scored his first senior goal in the Blues’ 3-1 loss to 10-man West Ham, only to be forced off before halftime with a knee injury.

Chelsea have already lost captain Reece James to a hamstring injury, while summer addition Christopher Nkunku will be out until December after undergoing knee surgery for an injury sustained during a pre-season friendly.

“With Carney, we need to assess him, and we’ll see tomorrow and hope he’ll be fine,” Pochettino added.

“He’ll see the doctor, and I’m hoping it’s not too serious.”

Pochettino stated that Enzo Fernandez’s missed penalty was the game’s turning point. Alphonse Areola comfortably put away the Argentine midfielder’s spot-kick.

He also defended new £110 million signing Moises Caciedo, who gave away a late penalty with a clumsy tackle on Emerson Palmieri after being brought midway through the second half.

“We took the decision to play with him for 30 minutes because he is ready,” Pochettino explained.

“He did well there and there were some positive things, but he conceded a goal at the last minute and he will be disappointed.”

Chelsea received a twin blow in east London after losing 3-1 to West Ham United; they are also waiting for the full diagnosis of Carney Chukwuemeka’s injury.

The 19-year-old has started the first two games of the season and had a great effect at West Ham, scoring the equalizer at a time when Chelsea were dominating, but he went down with what appeared to be a knee injury shortly after.

“However, if we score a penalty and lead 2-1 at halftime, we’re talking about a different game.”
