Spain defeated England 1-0 in the Women’s World Cup final in Sydney.

Spain defeated England 1-0 on Sunday to win the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time.

Spain broke the deadlock when Olga Carmona splendid a left-footed goal from close range in the 29th minute at Sydney’s Stadium Australia.

In the 70th minute, Spain wasted a golden chance to double their lead against England when Jennifer Hermoso’s penalty was saved by Mary Earps.

Spain outplayed England to win the Women’s World Cup final in Sydney, due to defender Olga Carmona’s first-half goal.

Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses, the reigning European champions, were defeated by the Spaniards on Sunday at Stdium Australia.

 

England’s women were attempting to duplicate the men’s team that won the World Cup on home soil in 1966, but they were up against a Spain side that was full of fire and flair.

It was Spain’s first triumph in the competition, managed by manager Jorge Vilda. The team included several players from Barcelona’s Champions League-winning squad.

After a scything move, Spain skipper took them the lead in the 29th minute, slotting a precise winner past England keeper Mary Earps.

Earps later kept her team in the game by saving Jenni Hermosa’s penalty in the 69th minute.

 

Even with 13 minutes of added time at the end of the match, England was unable to find an equalizer.

After the game, England captain Millie Bright commented, “It’s hard, but it’s football.” It could go either way. They work well together.

“We weren’t at our best in the first half, but we had chances in the second half, and we hit the crossbar.” Congratulations, but this is the difficult part of football.

 

“There’s a lot of emotion (right now), but I’m really proud of the team.” Few people get to play in the World Cup final.

 

“This isn’t the end for us; we’ll come back stronger.”
