Gabriel came on as a late substitute in Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest in the Premier League opener.

Following Jurrien Timber’s knee injury, many supporters anticipated him to return to the lineup.

Instead of Gabriel, Takehiro Tomiyasu enters the game and starts at left back.

Ben White retains his place at center-back, with natural defensive midfielder Thomas Partey filling in at right-back once more.

Aaron Ramsdale keeps his place in goal, but new recruit David Raya is forced to settle for a bench berth after joining from Brentford.

Meanwhile, Scotland international Kierney, whose future in north London is uncertain, has been left out of the matchday squad.

Arsenal fans questioned Arteta’s decision to leave out Gabriel, with one fan tweeting: “No Gabriel again? We had better win or Arteta would receive a lot of flak.”

“Why is Gabriel on the bench?” asked another.
