Carney Chukwuemeka had knee surgery after injuring his knee while playing for Chelsea against West Ham on Sunday.

According to the PA news agency, the 19-year-old, who scored his first goal for the club in their 3-1 loss at the London Stadium, will be sidelined for six weeks.

Chukwuemeka netted the equalizer before being forced off during halftime of Chelsea’s 3-1 loss to West Ham at the London Stadium.

“Carney underwent surgery and will now begin his recovery,” stated Chelsea in a statement.

“The 19-year-old will work with the club’s medical department on his rehabilitation at Cobham (Chelsea’s training ground).”

After signing Aston Villa for £20 million a year ago, the former Aston Villa midfielder battled for game time last season, but has started both of Mauricio Pochettino’s first two Premier League games in charge.

He underwent surgery on Monday night after being withdrawn 15 minutes from the end of his team’s defeat in east London, Pochettino’s first defeat as manager.

He had earlier equalized Nayef Aguerd’s headed goal by cutting inside and smashing a powerful right-footed drive past goalie Alphonse Areola.

It was his first goal in 17 appearances in all competitions since joining Chelsea.

After Enzo Fernandez saved a penalty for the visitors, the Hammers went on to win it in the second half with a goal from Michail Antonio and a penalty from Lucas Paqueta.
