Manchester City are exploring late bids for Eberechi Eze and Matheus Nunes in order to strengthen their midfield options before the transfer window ends.

Crystal Palace are thought to value their star playmaker Eze at £70 million and have already had success this summer in fending off interest from large clubs in their attractive players after Michael Olise secured a new deal amid interest from City and Chelsea. Nunes had a great debut season in the Premier League for Wolves, which drew interest from Liverpool and has put him on the Blues’ radar. City have had an uncharacteristically turbulent final few weeks of the transfer window, leaving them scurrying for solutions as they deal with a developing injury issue. Pep Guardiola chose an inexperienced bench for Saturday’s win against Newcastle United and stated afterward that the club had some ‘important decisions’ to make in the winter market.

One such choice was taken shortly after, when City negotiated a price with Rennes to sign winger Jeremy Doku to replace Riyad Mahrez. The 21-year-old had his physical on Wednesday and is expected to be unveiled in time to face Sheffield United this weekend.

Midfield has proven to be an issue, with Kevin De Bruyne ruled out for the remainder of the season after hamstring surgery. The Blues also lost captain Ilkay Gundogan at the start of the summer and were eager to add to their midfield options after signing Mateo Kovacic before the Belgian was injured.

City failed to sign Declan Rice before he joined Arsenal, and they then dropped their interest in West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta after the FA started an inquiry into alleged betting rules violations against him.

MEN Sport understands that Eze and Nunes are possibilities that City have loved and examined for some time and have now narrowed down on following De Bruyne’s injury and the difficulties in signing Paqueta. However, hefty bids would be required to persuade either team to part with one of their most valuable players so close to the September 1 deadline.

City have no difficulty walking away from agreements if the asking price exceeds their valuation, and their spending this summer will total roughly £160 million once Doku’s signing is announced, along with the signings of Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol. However, once Aymeric Laporte’s sale to Al-Nassr is completed, more than £100 million will be recovered in sales.
