Chelsea has announced the arrival of Deivid Washington from Santos.
Deivid Washington, 18, has completed his £17.1 million move from Santos to Chelsea; New England Revolution keeper Djordje Petrovic will battle with Robert Sanchez following the departures of Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga; Blues will pay £14 million for Serbia international.
Chelsea have signed forward Deivid Washington from Santos for £17.1m (€20m) on a seven-year deal.
The club must now decide whether the 18-year-old Brazilian will be part of Mauricio Pochettino’s first-team squad this season or go on loan to gain first-team experience.
Meanwhile, Blues goalie Djordje Petrovic is likely to undergo a medical in the next 24 to 48 hours.
Chelsea has accepted personal terms with Serbia international Petrovic and will pay the New England Revolution a sum in the region of £14 million, plus performance-related add-ons.
Petrovic will be Chelsea’s second major keeper signing this summer, following Robert Sanchez’s £25 million move from Brighton following Kepa Arrizabalaga’s loan move to Real Madrid and Edouard Mendy’s move to Al Ahli.
The 23-year-old has been a standout performer for New England Revolution, keeping seven clean sheets in 22 MLS games this term. Chelsea has announced the arrival of Deivid Washington from Santos
“What you could say about Chelsea is that they have performed admirably in these two games.” They performed well against Liverpool, and they played well against West Ham.
“But spending that much money feels strange when not many of us think Chelsea will finish in the top four.” That is not to say it will not happen. However, few believe that side, with that much money invested in it, will finish in the top four. That does not seem right for that amount of money to me.
“Even though I was very impressed with them in those two games, if you asked me how many players they need to challenge Manchester City – and I’m not talking about winning the league – I still believe they need a keeper, despite the fact that they just signed Robert Sanchez.” Because Thiago Silva is 38, I believe they still require a top center-half.
“I don’t believe there is a pure goal scorer.” Your keeper does not have to be a center-forward because Mohamed Salah of Liverpool plays on the right wing. So it’s not a jab against Nicolas Jackson; he’s only recently joined the club and I’ve been impressed with him.
“However, when you look at those key positions, it still feels like four players are required to challenge Manchester City, which does not feel right given the amount of money they have spent.”
