‘I couldn’t believe it,’ says Peter Schmeichel after Nottingham Forest goals against Andrea Onana of Manchester United.
Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi opened the scoring inside two minutes on Saturday with Manchester United looking vulnerable on the counter-attack.
Andre Onana “made it easy” for Taiwo Awoniyi to open the goal during Manchester United’s match against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, according to Peter Schmeichel.
Forest stunned the United fans with an early goal at Old Trafford, with Awoniyi finishing calmly after a spectacular counter-attack. A corner was wasted by the Reds, with the ball bouncing out to Morgan Gibbs-White, whose glanced header fell to the Nigerian.
He was able to get the ball ahead of Rashford, who was unable to stop the run. The Forest forward paused once in front of Onana, but the 27-year-old dropped to the floor too soon and forced his opponent’s decision.

United made a poor start, and things worsened only two minutes later as a free-kick deflected off Willy Boly’s head and into the net.
“I honestly couldn’t believe what I was seeing for the first goal,” Schmeichel said, according to Premier League Productions. “There were so many mistakes and so much went wrong.”
“Rashford is the last man, doesn’t win the tackle, and Onana makes it easy for Awoniyi.” Then it’s 1-0, and [Willy] Boly doesn’t move and simply heads it in 25 seconds later.”
United managed to pull a goal back through Christian Eriksen, the Dane flicking Rashford’s driven cross goalwards. Casemiro then equalised early in the second half before Bruno Fernandes’ penalty handed United the lead.
Speaking after the game, Schmeichel said: “That’s two home games for Man Utd now, they’ve won them both but there’s so many things not working. It’s a good three points but you expect Man Utd to keep going and not to be hanging on at the end. It worries you a little bit.”
