Mikel Arteta defends Kai Havertz and claims Arsenal’should’ have scored seven goals against Fulham.
The Gunners boss was frustrated after his side were held to a 2-2 draw at Fulham and insists the German attacker will come good
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has defended under-fire attacker Kai Havertz after another poor performance for the German, saying the Gunners’should have scored seven’ in Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Fulham.
Havertz was chastised by supporters upon his transfer from Chelsea, and three games into his Arsenal tenure, it is still unclear where he fits in.
The 24-year-old has yet to score or assist for his new club and was substituted by Fabio Vieira after 56 minutes on Saturday, but Arteta is confident he will.
“I saw an action when he played backwards and he could have turned,” Arteta told reporters following Craven Cottage’s 2-2 tie.
“I think it was more the demands of everyone to play forward and impact the game in the final third because we were desperate to win.” Mikel Arteta defends Kai Havertz and claims Arsenal’should’ have scored seven goals against Fulham.
When asked if he thought Havertz could win over the fans, he replied, “Yes, I believe so.” I believe he has already accomplished much.
“Today was difficult in some ways. He was in terrific positions, but the ball never arrived. He should have scored a lot more goals this season in a number of situations. That is the thing that is lacking.”
Arsenal conceded late on and had to settle for a point despite dominating the game, leaving Arteta upset.
“Right from the start, we gave away an incredible goal,” he told Match of the Day. “You make your life extremely difficult for yourself.” However, the team responded admirably. We dominated the game, generated numerous chances, and should have easily scored five, six, or seven goals.
“And once you’ve done the most difficult thing, which is to come back ahead against a well-organized team, you have to defend your box from one corner.” It is their only chance, and you are penalized.
“Yet still you get another two chances and don’t score – that is the story of the game. The amount of things we did to merit to win the game comfortably, we end up with one point. We have to show another level of commitment and desire and ‘over my dead body’. With 10 men, you cannot concede a goal.”
