Nunez scores twice late in Liverpool's 2-1 victory over Newcastle.

Darwin Nunez scored twice off the bench as Liverpool secured a 2-1 Premier League win over Newcastle United on Sunday, as the Reds bounced back from captain Virgil van Dijk’s straight red card in the first half.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, who received an early yellow card, gave Newcastle the lead in the 25th minute when he miscontrolled the ball, allowing Anthony Gordon to rush onto it and slot it past Alisson Becker.

Just over two minutes later, Van Dijk was shown a straight red card for fouling Alexander Isak on the edge of the box, and Newcastle appeared set to end a record of 13 Premier League games without a win over Liverpool.

The home team dominated possession but failed to kill the game off, and Nunez equalized in the 81st minute before scoring an almost identical second in stoppage time to steal the three points.

Things had not gone as planned for Liverpool and Jürgen Klopp on their Sunday afternoon trip to Newcastle United. Another game, another red card, another disputed call. That appeared to be the story for the most of the game, until Darwin Nez came.

The Uruguayan arrived at the ideal time, providing exactly what Liverpool had been lacking throughout the game. A burst of energy and a lively nuisance up front to trouble Newcastle’s defence, which had been largely unprovoked up to that time.
