Liverpool set a new Premier League record with a late Newcastle winner.
Liverpool set a new Premier League record with a stoppage-time winner from Darwin Nunez in Sunday’s 2-1 triumph over Newcastle United.
The Reds had a dreadful first half, with Anthony Gordon giving Newcastle the lead in the 25th minute and Virgil van Dijk being sent off three minutes later.
It was the first time Liverpool had a player sent off in consecutive Premier League games since March/April 2015, and it left Jurgen Klopp’s team with a mountain to climb at St James Park.
Against all odds, Liverpool rallied in the second half, thanks to Nunez’s third brace as a Reds player.
The Uruguayan equalised with just under 10 minutes remaining, before slotting home the winning goal in the third minute of stoppage time.
Not only did the 24-year-old secure all three points, his late winner helped the Reds break a Premier League record.
Nunez’s winning strike was the 42nd goal scored in the 90th minute or later by Liverpool in the Premier League — the most by any team in the competition’s history.
Klopp also enjoyed a record-breaking day after he recorded his 13th consecutive Premier League win against Eddie Howe, which is the longest winning run by one manager against an opposing manager in the competition’s history
The Liverpool manager said after the game that the thrilling triumph was unlike any other in his management career.
Sunday’s triumph extended Liverpool’s unbeaten streak against Newcastle to 14 games, dating back to December 2015.
Having enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season, the Merseyside club are sitting in fourth position after three matches.
They will now turn their attention to their final game before the international break, a home encounter against Aston Villa on Sunday.
